Well off the beaten track as far as tourism goes, the small village of Gerolakos, nestles in the foothills of the White Mountains a mere 13 km to the south of Chania, providing a perfect location to enjoy the natural untouched beauty of rural Crete, yet still be within striking distance of Chania and the beautiful beaches of Crete’s north coast.
Terraced on the hillside above the solitary road into Gerolakos, villa Verekinthos has been home to the Papafilipakis family for more than 250 years and Nikos its present owner, has patiently spent the past 3 years transforming it into a quirky and comfortable ‘retreat’ retaining all the immense charm and history of the original building, whilst judiciously incorporating all mod cons.
An abundance of exposed stonework, plus rustic open staircases and wood flooring in the bedrooms create a genteel old world ambience, subtly set off by chic modern bathroom fittings and fascinating decorative touches. We loved the wooden bedroom balustrade with nautical style rope fittings held to the floor with a selection of ‘unlikely’ metal fastenings!
From the road side parking area, stone steps lead up to a high walled gateway to the property, with an entrance door opening onto the terrace where the 38sq. meter swimming pool is located. From here further stone steps lead up to the sunny main courtyard notable for its delightful covered terrace area with rustic table and chairs and mesmeric views up the valley towards the mountains.
The villa comprises of 3 connected buildings.
In the 1st building there is an open plan kitchen/dining area with 4 ring hob and oven, dishwasher, washing machine, iron and ironing board, a bathroom, a liiving room with satellite TV, CD player and open fire and a gallery double bedroom.
In the 2nd building there is a sitting room, ensuite shower room with elevated double sleeping platform.
In the 3rd building there is a sitting room with shower room, steps lead to a double bedroom.
Outside there is a swimming pool with roman steps into shallow end and a sitting area with table & chairs.
Maid service, change of bed linen and towels on arrival and midweek.
