SAMARIA GORGE
A visit to Crete’s most famous and Europe´s longest gorge is in our programme. The council of Europe designated the National Park of Samaria as a nature reserve of great importance. Our tour begins early in the morning, enabling you to set off before the crowd. Your walk will start at a height of 1200 m, climbing up the first 3 km. The Samaria gorge offers a plethora of natural features, including wild-flowers, century-old trees, impressive rocky formations, crystal-clear springs. You may also have the chance to see the wild goat Kri Kri.
Later, we will pass through the famous Iron Gates and some old deserted villages. The walk lasts approximately 5-7 hours, depending on your pace. A guide is always nearby to ensure your safety. In Agia Roumeli, you can have lunch, before boarding the Ferry to Chora Sfakion. From here we return home by coach.
Time Schedule:
Departure from Plakias at 06:00, and arrival in Omalos at approximately 08:30. Walk through the gorge. Free time for lunch in Agia Roumeli. Departure by boat at 18:00 from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion. Bus to Plakias, where we will arrive around 20:00.
FESTOS, GORTYS, MATALA
Departure from Plakias at 08:00. First we will stop at the waterfalls in the Kourtaliotiko Gorge and then we visit the village of Spili to see the Venetian fountain with its 25 lion heads. Free time for a snack and some shopping. Our next stop will be in Festos, the second most important Minoan Palace in Crete. We will explore the area where the famous Disc of Phaistos was found. Next we will visit Gortys, the capital of Crete in Roman Times, to admire the Odeon Ruins, the Christian Basilica of Saint Titos and the most ancient Law Code in Europe. Lastly, we will stop for a swim in Matala, where you can visit the Neolithic caves. Arrival in Plakias at approximately 18:00.
KNOSSOS – ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM IN HERAKLION
Our first destination is the world famous Minoan Palace of Knossos - a must for every visitor on Crete. You will have plenty of time to explore the ancient site, while a guided tour can be provided upon request.
Our next stop is Heraklion Town, where we will visit the Arch aeological Museum, which displays a unique collection of Minoan objects found on digs throughout Crete. You will have free time to get acquainted with the town before returning to Rethymnon.
Time Schedule:
Departure from Plakias at 08:00. Arrival at Knossos at about 10:00. You will have about 2 ½ hours to visit the sites in the area. Departure for Hearklion to visit the Archaeological Museum . Arrival in Plakias at about 18:00.
ARMENI, ARKADI, MARGHARITES & RETHYMNON
Our first destination on this excursion is the old Minoan cemetery in Armeni. Then we visit the monastery in Arkadi, one of the greatest historical symbols of Crete. Afterwards, we stop at a pottery workshop in the village of Margharites, where you will be given the opportunity to see the traditional way pottery is produced on Crete. We also take a break for lunch of typical Cretan cuisine, in a small, quaint taverna in Stavromenos. The last stop is Rethymnon to visit the Venetian Fortress Fortezza, the Minaret Neratze, the churches, the Venetian Loggia, the Rimondi Fountain, the Port, and to shop.
